Spooky Movies to Carve Pumpkins to

I love October. The leaves, the chilly winds, the hoodies. With October comes Halloween, or Hallow’s Eve for all you people who’s fixing their glasses right now. I like to do this activity where I “get spooky”. This is an exclusive activity that happens as Halloween draws near. I shut off the lights and start pretending to be a creature of the night stalking my prey, like in the horror movies. I will slowly open doors, make heavy breathing noises, so on and so forth. It really gets me in the Halloween spirit. It also scares the shit out of whoever else is in the house. Fun stuff. You should try it.

Anyway, here is a quick list of scary movies to watch in the lovely month of October, in no particular order.

  1. Shaun of the Dead

Zombies and funny British people. It is as Halloween as … as… idk but you get my point. This is the first of what fans have called the “cornetto trilogy” of movies directed by Edgar Wright. It is really funny, very gut-wrenching (literally), and you fall in love with the characters as they navigate a zombie ridden London. The film doesn’t take itself too seriously but there are serious moments. It’s such a good time from start to finish. Highly recommend watching in a group.

2. 28 Days Later

Zombies and regular British People. Even better. This movie is intense. A man wakes from a coma 28 days later and finds his city practically abandoned. What happened? Zombies bitch. If that sounds familiar, it is basically the opening plot for The Walking Dead, but this movie came first. This movie has some of the most intense cinema moments that I have experienced. It is a simple and straight-forward plot that gets your heart rate up, or in the words of my good friend, “an emotional roller coaster that leaves you sweaty.”

3. The Thing  (1982)

Talk about suspense! An Arctic expedition team is trapped in the frozen tundra with a shape shifting alien. The alien takes the form of the people it kills and the entire film you don’t know who’s who. The special effects are incredible, the acting is great, the scenery is beautiful. Just kidding, all you see is snow piles. I guess the scenery is beautiful if that’s your thing. Snuggle up in a blanket and some hot cocoa and enjoy this movie in the dark.
