Get busy watchin’ movies, or get busy dyin’

If you don’t get that reference in the headline of this post, don’t you worry my child you will get there one day. I am a movie lover who has watched thousands, yes thousands, of movies in my lifetime. It is my escape, my refuge, my muse, my flame. As of late, it has been increasingly difficult to watch as many films as I’d like because of college and athletics (Life, man) but I still sneak in a movie whenever possible.

The closest thing to watching a good movie would be reading a good book. But even when I read a book, in my head I imagine it all as a long descriptive movie. The books give me the tools to transfer the words into a visual imagination. I usually assign actors to the characters in the books to give them a face in my head. But we aren’t here to talk about books, we are here to talk about movies.

Here is quick list of 5 movies for the person who has literally never seen a good movie in their life. This is a good list to start

  1. The Shawshank Redemption

The highest rated movie on IMDB, and rightfully so. It is a masterpiece of a film. It follows the life of a successful banker Andy DuFriegn who is imprisoned for the murder of his wife. Emotional, uplifting, and centered around friendship, this film based on a Stephen King novel is my personal favorite movie that I have had the pleasure of viewing.

2. The Godfather

Yea yea, you are probably thinking that I am just following the IMDB top 250, but this film deserves to be #2 as well. An absolute adventure of a film that follows the Sicilian crime family, the Corrleones, as they weave through danger and death. Family is everything. A must watch.

3. The Green Mile

The only movie that no matter how many times I have watched it, I still cry. It’s that good. A prison guard’s life changes when he meets a massive inmate (literally gigantic) that is scheduled for execution for the murder of 2 young girls. But there is more to this inmate that meets the eye. Coincidentally, this is another film based on a Stephen King novel. What can I say? The guy writes great stories.

4.  Forrest Gump

I mean, if you haven’t seen Forrest Gump, you might need to re-evaluate your life. “Momma always says, Life was like a box of chocolates. you never know what you’re gonna get” or “run Forrest run!” If you haven’t heard either of those lines, you REALLY need to re-evaluate your time spent on this earth. The film follows the life of, you guessed it, Forrest Gump, a man from Greenbough, Alabama. You watch as his tumultuous life unfolds from a rough childhood to a tough adolescence, etc. It’s a great time.

5. Casablanca

I had to include a true classic. A black and white romance thriller, Casablanca follows a club owner who meets his long lost love who is now married. Old love is renewed, but it is complicated. What relationship isn’t, amirite?!?!?! Great acting, memorable quotes, and a wonderful ending, Casablanca has everything a movie lover wants, and more.
